Install The Grimm Speed Strut Tower Brace on a Scion FR-S

This article is visible to only you.

A strut tower brace ties the two sides of your car together to increase rigidity and improve handling characteristics. The FR-S/BRZ/GT86 already has two braces going from the strut towers to the firewall, but adding a third going straight across completes the triforce of power!

This tutorial was made specifically for the GrimmSpeed strut tower brace, but it will apply to most other brands.

Time to complete: about 10 minutes.

All the parts you need are provided in the GrimmSpeed Strut Tower Brace Kit:

  • Strut Tower Brace
  • Mesh Sleeve
  • Two Zip Ties
1

Using the 12mm socket and wrench, remove the two nuts that hold down the existing bars on each of the strut towers.

2

Keep the nuts close by, we'll need them later.

Installing the Brace

3

Lower the strut brace onto the four bolts you removed the nuts from earlier. It can only go on one way, so make sure the GrimmSpeed logo is on the passenger side of the car.

4

Notice that the strut brace sits on top of the air conditioner line. Don't worry about it for now; we will fix this in the next section.

5

Thread the nuts onto the bolts and tighten them with your fingers.

6

Adjust your torque wrench to 12 ft-lbs.

7

Use the torque wrench and the 12mm socket to tighten the nuts. Follow the instructions for your torque wrench so that you know when to stop tightening.

Securing the Air Conditioner Line

8

Wrap the mesh sleeve around the line. It does not need to line up with the brace, it needs to line up with where your zip tie will go later.

9

Wrap one zip tie around the fuel bracket, but do not tighten very much.

10

Thread another zip tie through the first one and around the A/C line.

11

Re-position the mesh sleeve so that the zip tie sits naturally in the middle of the sleeve.

12

Tighten down both zip ties and clip the ends off with some scissors.

13

If you didn't position the sleeve correctly, just cut the zip tie and use a new one.

Go for a test drive!

Remember to periodically check everything to make sure the nuts are torqued properly and the A/C line is safely secured.
