Change The Oil on a 2008-2013 Subaru Forester
Learn how to change the oil on your 2008-2013 Subaru Forester X with a 2.5L engine. We've got a step by step how to with all the parts and tools you'll need.
Subaru calls for an oil change every 7,500 miles under normal use. Though Subaru's boxer engines do seem prone to burning oil, so keep in mind you should check the oil level regularly.
- 5.5 qt. of 0W20 Synthetic Oil
- Oil Filter - Choose One: Subaru 15208AA130 (best oem filter), or Subaru 15208AA15A, Subaru 15208AA12A, Mobile M1-110, Fram PH7317, Purolator PL14615
- Replacement Oil Crush Washer #803916010
- Optional - M16-1.5 Replacement Oil Drain Plug or upgrade to a Fumoto F-108 Valve
Get Started by Lifting the Car
Lift the front of the vehicle by driving the Forester onto a set of Rhino Ramps.
Don't forget to engage park, apply your parking brake, and use wheel chocks
Drain the Oil
Screw the new filter on, tightening it per the instructions on the box.
Mobil1 filter instructions say to seat the gasket and tighten one 3/4 turn.
Fill with New Oil
Check the oil level by removing the dip stick, drying it and re-inserting it.
Check the level by reading where the oil shows up on the end.
The distance from low to full on the dip stick is approx. 1 qt.
Finish Up

Your local auto parts store will take your old oil as long as you don't mix it with any other fluids.
