Replace The Spark Plugs & Ignition Coils on a Chevrolet Trax

This article is visible to only you.

Replacing spark plugs on the 2019 1.4L Turbo Ecotec engine (aka. LUV/LUJ) in the Chevy Trax, Sonic, Cruze, and Buick Encore is very easy. Interestingly the coil pack is a single unit - so good luck if you need one coil, you're buying all 4!

  • Optional: Ignition Coils: OEM: GM ELPHI 19005362
  • Spark Plugs: ACDelco 41-121 (gap: .028)

Remove The Ignition Coil Pack

1

Remove the engine cover. It pulls straight up with no fasteners holding it on.

2

Use a T-30 Torx bit to remove the 2 screws that hold the coil pack in place.

3

Remove the main connector from the coil pack.

The connector uses a purple sliding lock tab. Slide that back, away from the coil pack. Then you can squeeze the tab where the 3 grip lines are and wiggle the connector off.

4

Pull the coil straight up to remove it. You may have to wiggle it a bit to free it from the spark plugs.

To remove a spark plug, use a 5/8" spark plug socket.

The spark plug holes are rather shallow on this engine. The socket I used was long enough to not require any extensions.
